Surgical orthodontics, or orthognathic surgery, is a type of treatment that involves combined orthodontics and jaw surgery to correct cases with severe skeletal discrepancies and malocclusions (bad bites) that cannot be corrected with orthodontics alone.

The rewards of orthognathic surgery are multifold. It achieves a beautiful, healthy smile and builds self- confidence. Many of our patients have mentioned how grateful they are to be able to chew properly and enjoy their food.

ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY AT FRIAL ORTHODONTICS

During your consultation at our Laguna Niguel orthodontic office, Dr. Frial will evaluate your jaw alignment and determine if orthognathic surgery is necessary based on the severity of your jaw relationship. If surgery is determined to be the best course of treatment, you will be referred to an oral surgeon before your orthodontic treatment begins. During your referral appointment with the oral surgeon, you will have the opportunity to discuss any risks and concerns you may have.

Orthognathic surgery is done in the middle of your orthodontic treatment, so you will be wearing braces before and after surgery. Before surgery, Dr. Frial will prepare your teeth and bite to allow the oral surgeon to properly align your jaws. Several weeks after surgery, when your jaws have healed, Dr. Frial will finalize the teeth and bite to fit properly with your new jaw relationship. Braces are usually removed within six to 12 months following surgery. Afterwards, you will wear a retainer to help maintain your new smile.

As with any surgery, there are certain risks involved. However, orthognathic surgery has been around since the 1800s. It is generally safe when performed by an experienced oral surgeon. Dr. Frial works closely with several skilled oral surgeons to ensure you receive the best possible results. He will communicate with your oral surgeon throughout your care to make certain your treatment goes as planned and on schedule.

TESTIMONIAL

“Dr. Frial and his team are the best. My case was a difficult one that involved double jaw surgery and I knew I was in good hands with Dr. Frial after the first visit. He took the time to explain what needed to be done, how he was going to do it, and how long it would take. He worked closely with my surgeon and dentist to provide me the best care. He did more than just make my teeth straight. He improved my self-confidence and gave me a smile that I only dreamed of.” – GV –
